His paintings are an investigation into the origin and dissolution of relationships between people, their transience and eternity. This is about love and suffocation, sex and despair, and what binds and separates men and women.
Recently he has become very intrigued by the written language as a visual form and means of expression. It has now started to have a prominent role in his work. He experiments with the formal language of the written word. Luc Vandervelde uses a code language consisting of written texts. These texts are emotionally charged and form an abstract language, in which the semantic meaning of language is subordinate to the visual aspect.
At the moment he is working on a series of abstractions named ‘remains of the day’, which depict when memories become a mental abstraction. These paintings are focused more on the material and intuition. Working in both paint and collage, he incorporates elements from his daily life -- feelings of the day or personal memories -- into the paper. The act and the movement plays an important role in these works which are built upon different layers of tape, charcaol, written text or code language, post-it’s, spraybomb and images. Lately, he translates the absraction into the space by working directly on the wall and ceiling. He describes it as an abstract expressionism with urban flair.
